It has always been the standard idea that above the ground pools cannot be luxurious and this has to be accepted as a norm that makes it different from an “In the ground pool”. The “In the ground pool” may be excellent but the logic that this makes the above ground pool inferior is not necessarily the case. Generally you get what you pay for in the swimming pool market as in most things in life but imagination and a good eye has nearly always helped to mitigate a problem and this case is no different.
Firstly the size of the above the ground pools is getting ever larger and you can even get purpose built ones to your own size. Theoretically there is not really a size of pool that you would want that cannot be built above ground.
There are however some very good designs of pools now that are compact to medium size that are excellent in appearance, value and performance. They come built of wood with standard liners or they can be of composite materials, which appear to be wood or stone to the untrained eye. The materials that they are made of last a long time without fading or deteriorating to any large extent. Possibly the lining is the major thing as it will only have a 7 to 10 year life span but this can be used as an advantage as the pool will look like new after its installation.
Pools that were built to be above the ground can also take advantage of an irregular or sloping site. There are many pools that can be above the ground, partly in the ground or totally in the ground and they have different appearances in each case. In many cases it may be sensible to sink the pool a couple of feet into the ground but no more as below that level there is a rock base to extract.
In the case of a sloping site consider digging into the hill to give an access into the pool at ground level or a level much closer to ground at one end. This may be possible to build into the pool, with a patio access for sitting around and fitment of a barbeque. In this case the treatment plant and the pumps and filters and heaters can be hidden away at the lower end of the pool.

"Resort-style swimming pools with fountains"2011-06-29 16:46:23 by DrawNivek

FAIRFAX, Va. -- Resort-style swimming pools with fountains and heated spas, billiards rooms, granite counter tops, ceramic tile, indoor basketball courts, stainless steel appliances -- many Fairfax County taxpayers cannot afford such luxuries. But they are paying for these amenities for use by low-income residents who live in subsidized housing in affluent neighborhoods.
"They're a part of our rental program where we subsidize the rents for the individuals in the units, and we end up having to pick up the condo fees," supervisor Pat Herrity told 630 WMAL News
